ANDY JOHNSTON: FOUNDER OF DANDY FILMS
Andy Johnston (he/him) is an award winning queer producer, screenwriter and creative artist based in Regional NSW. Inspired by subversive storytelling methods and evocative aesthetics, Andy engages the Queer lens in his work to tell bold human stories that challenge the norm. Passionate, generous and purpose driven, he is a collaborative storyteller and visionary with production and performance credits spanning stage and screen.
A graduate of the Victorian College of Arts’ Master of Screen Producing degree Andy was awarded the Orloff Family Trust Award for excellence in his studies. His graduate film 'Black Trans Miracle' (dir. Tinaye Niyathi) had it’s international premiere at Toronto’s Inside Out Festival 2024 followed by screening in India, UK, Australia and The United States His other short film credits include: ‘The Last Cinema' (dir. Sam Carson) which one Best Experimental Short at Sydney Short Film Festival 2024 and You Me & Him' won Best Short Film at Fishnets and Film Festival in San Jose not long after it's International premiere at Poland's LGBTQ Film Festival.
Andy is the founder of Dandy Films, a production company dedicated to the creation, development and production of stories made for and by the Queer community. He is also a dedicated advocate for the normalisation of sustainable workflows, inclusion and access practices and he takes great pride in raising awareness of mental health and wellbeing issues and prevention strategies in the screen industry.
Andy is currently collaborating with a range of diverse creatives to develop a slate of fresh and exciting Film/TV & Online projects for local and international audiences. You can also find him entertaining crowds up and down the east coast as his drag persona Viktoria Bitter - the glamour bogan with a hairy chest and heart of gold.
